When the Ice Cream Man paid a visit to the Jacksonville office (bow tie and all), it didn’t take long before the building cleared out to the front lawn. We beat the heat with the Choco-Taco, Strawberry Shortcake, Orange Creamsicle and other childhood favs. Thank you Mr. Ice Cream Man!

When Shepherd began working with the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens to promote their 50th Anniversary, illustrator extraordinaire and art director mastermind Mike Barnhart was the perfect person to spearhead the creative effort.

Mike would design and create invitations, banners, billboards and 15-second TV spots for “50 Forward,” an effort to advertise the milestone to a new, wider audience.

“The museum is a constantly changing, vibrant environment, and not only an archive for antiquities. To reflect this, we presented a concept that incorporated the iconic Cummer main building into a “50″ symbol that put the focus on the museum itself.”

As the concept unfolded, Mike incorporated some of the Cummer’s most notable pieces to create a tangible connection between Jacksonville residents and the Cummer community.

“The Cummer’s just an amazing place,” Mike says. “It was important to me to show that as effectively as possible.”

The shirt design was selected by the race organizers as the Most Original Use of a Corporate Logo from among dozens of shirts entered into the competition for three awards.

The design features a large orange smiley face, a reference to the orange dot in the center of the UF Proton Therapy Institute logo that represents a proton and its precision in treating cancer. On the back, the words “I’m positively charged” speak to both the nature of protons, a part of an atom that’s positively charged, and to the proton therapy team’s character.

Way to go Maria Taylor, Jessica Golder, and Theresa Makrush!

The 2011 Citrus Cel Animation Festival presents Platypus, by Jay Fogg.

Platypus is a two-minute film based on a short story Jay wrote in the late 90s, inspired by two newspaper articles: one was about a mass grave site revealed by satellite photography somewhere in the Bosnian war zone; the other was about a platypus born in captivity, which was one of two born in captivity over the course of 50 years. After that, it’s all about the numbers … and a little about war and peace.

Jay saves our ‘you know whats’ on a daily basis, so let’s support his.

Platypus shows Friday, April 8, 2011 in ‘Apples to Oranges’. Details.

We’re all familiar with the fun stories of Bob, “He’s Allergic to Eggs?”, and Jacquie, “Fish is Gross!”. (Side note, this is “Bob the Human”, not to be confused with “Bob the Dog”.) It’s great to finally see them in print, for the rest of the first coast to chuckle at and appreciate. Now that I’ve mentioned their canine counterpart, it only seems fair to mention their cat Linus. I’m sure he would have loved the fish.

Check out the article.

Jacquie also blogs about living with Type 1 diabetes. Unfamiliar? Start reading.

Race director Alex Yount explains, “Warrior Dash is not your standard 5k race. Whether it’s a superhero, medieval knight or Smurf, Warrior Dash gives people the opportunity to express their inner warrior. It’s the freedom to let loose, dress up in costumes, eat a turkey leg, get muddy, and have a beer that makes you fall in love with Warrior Dash.”

This is the inside story of Street Art – a brutal and revealing account of what happens when fame, money and vandalism collide. with wildly unexpected results.

One of the most provocative films about art ever made, Exit Through the Gift Shop is a fascinating study of low-level criminality, comradeship and incompetence. By turns shocking, hilarious and absurd, this is an enthralling modern-day fairytale… with bolt cutters.
